480 Queensland jobs at risk as Aurizon flags cuts

Queensland rail company Aurizon is cutting 480 workers as part of a productivity drive aimed at saving $130 million. In an ASX statement this morning, Aurizon said it would cease maintenance work on passenger trains at its workshops in Townsville at the end of next month and at Redbank, west of Brisbane, in June next year. There is also a proposal to reduce staff at two workshops who work on freight operations, with the aim of closing the Redbank workshop in two years' time. Unions say rail staff are stunned and angered by Aurizon's decision. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has called an urgent meeting of its state executive to discuss the matter.
