Victorian man dies in hospital after two days in police custody
/A man who was in police custody in Melbourne has died soon after he was transferred to hospital.
Victoria Police said in a statement the 59-year-old was arrested on Friday in the Gippsland town of Morwell as part of a federal police investigation.
The man was remanded in custody at Morwell police station, before being transported to Dandenong police station in Melbourne.
"He subsequently reported feeling unwell and disclosed to police he had consumed a large amount of non-prescription medication prior to being arrested," the statement said.
"The man was subsequently conveyed to hospital and passed away on Sunday."
Homicide squad detectives will prepare a report for the coroner.
The investigation into the man's death will be overseen by Victoria Police's Professional Standards Command.
