Imran Khan has twice enjoyed global prominence, first as a brilliant all-round cricketer, then as prime minister of Pakistan. Now he’s in jail for leaking state secrets and selling state property – crimes his lawyers dispute and many Pakistanis reject.

In the latest prosecution Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been convicted of violating Islamic law. The couple allegedly married too soon after her divorce.

Professor Samina Yasmeen of the Centre for Muslim States and Societies at the University of Western Australia, is in Pakistan. She explains this religious law.
