Police allege man donned helmet while crashing his car into Geraldton Police Station's bollards
/ By Brianna MelvilleA 42-year-old man accused of deliberately driving his car into the safety bollards at Geraldton Police Station has been remanded in custody for several days while a magistrate awaits a psychological report.
The Geraldton Magistrate's Court heard David James Fleay accelerated from the police station car park and crashed into safety bollards in front of the glass wall of the station foyer.
Police say the incident happened at 10am on Sunday, during public opening hours.
A safety bollard was damaged and there were no injuries.
CCTV footage played in court showed a white Holden Astra hatchback driving across the police station car park in a direct line towards the glass wall near the station's entrance.
The court heard Mr Fleay emerged from the car wearing a motorcycle helmet and was immediately arrested by officers.
Mr Fleay has been in custody since his arrest.
During his first court appearance on Monday, Magistrate Matthew Walton remarked on the "extraordinarily unusual" and "extremely violent" nature of the alleged offence.
He noted that Mr Fleay had a history of drug use and that his actions could align with someone experiencing a drug-induced psychosis.
Mr Fleay's lawyer told the court he had previously experienced extended periods of homelessness, and a previous psychiatric report had suggested a provisional diagnosis of delusional disorder.
During his second court appearance on Tuesday, Magistrate Walton said the CCTV in his view "reinforced" the substance of the alleged facts and the seriousness of the alleged offence.
However, he noted a "distinct lack of informational clarity" and remanded Mr Fleay's case until Thursday so that his lawyers could obtain a psychological assessment.
