Police say Bakery Hill tobacco store fire in Ballarat possibly linked to other recent fires
/ By Laura MayersPolice will investigate whether a fire that destroyed a Bakery Hill tobacco shop is linked to other recent tobacco shop fires across the state.
Emergency services were called to the store on Little Bridge Street about 3.40am on Thursday.
Investigators said no one was inside the building at the time but the shop was destroyed.
Police want anyone who may have CCTV in the area, or any information, to speak with them.
"The fire is being treated as suspicious and police will investigate whether it has any links to other recent fires," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
A Country Fire Authority spokesperson the fire had spread to an adjoining shop by the time crews arrived.
"The incident was under control at 4.09am and deemed safe at 5.18am," they said.
Police said a man was arrested at the scene on an unrelated outstanding warrant.
Series of fires
It comes only days after a car rammed into another tobacco store in Bendigo, investigators say the damage from the ramming caused another fire.
Police have also charged a 25-year-old Epping man with arson and extortion after links to Melbourne tobacco store fires.
Victoria Police previously announced Taskforce Lunar in order to investigate the Melbourne fires and whether they were linked to organised crime.
