Victoria Police investigating death of two-month-old baby in Ballarat
Police are investigating the death of a two-month-old boy in regional Victoria overnight.
Officers were called to reports of an unresponsive infant at a Swamp Gum Place property in the Ballarat suburb of Alfredton about 9:30pm.
A neighbour, who said she had known the family for about two years, said she heard "screaming and yelling" and went over to see what had happened.
"The little boy was just lying on the floor in the lounge room and [another] neighbour was helping," she said.
"We tried to resuscitate him but unfortunately paramedics came and weren't able to get him back."
She said emergency services were quick to arrive and performed CPR but the baby died at the scene.
"It's pretty disturbing as a mother. It's just heartbreaking," the woman said.
"He's just such a beautiful little boy. It's just so sad."
A crime scene was set up around the townhouse and detectives were seen examining the property.
Forensic experts attended the scene on Sunday morning, and neighbours were being interviewed by detectives.
Police say at this stage they are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the child's death.
"Police will await the results of a post-mortem to determine the cause of the death," police said in a statement.
