Police charge man after Brisbane Woolworths store vandalised with graffiti amid Australia Day merchandise controversy
By Melanie VujkovicPolice have arrested and charged a man who allegedly vandalised a Brisbane Woolworths store with graffiti, and set a flare off under the door.
The Woolworths Metro Teneriffe store on Commercial Road was closed on Monday morning, and residents in the apartment building were evacuated.
Police will allege around 5am, the man set off a flare at the business, causing the fire alarm to be activated.
Upon arrival, officers observed graffiti on the outside of the business.
The graffiti read "5 days 26 Jan Aussie Oi Oi Woolies F*** U", and the words "Boycott Woolies" was spray painted on the entrance doors.
It comes after the Woolworths Group announced stores would not stock specific Australia Day merchandise, saying there had been a gradual decline in demand in recent years.
The announcement prompted federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton to call for Australians to "boycott Woolworths" over the decision to not sell the products
Following investigations by the Fortitude Valley Criminal Investigation Branch, a 40-year-old Ormiston man was arrested in Fortitude Valley around 7:45pm.
He has been charged with one count each of wilful damage and wilful damage by graffiti and is expected to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 21.
