The Matildas lose to old foes Canada in their final match of the year, 1-0 — as it happened
By Samantha LewisThe Matildas have lost to old foes Canada in their final match of the year, beaten 1-0 after a first-half goal from Quinn.
The game against reigning Olympic gold medallists Canada in Vancouver also marked the final appearance of Christine Sinclair, football's all-team leading international goal-scorer.

Great year for the Matildas including a best-ever fourth place at the World Cup despite the two losses to Canada at the end of the year, now bring on the home and away series against Uzbekistan and the Olympics.

A good match. Much tighter and much more even. But that because Tony G threw as many senior player out ther that were available and not injured. Like others I am a bit bemused Tony G didn't mix the players up a bit more and give the inexperienced players more time on the field. I'm mindful of the Olympic qualifiers we still have to play and the Olympics themselves, and we do ourselves no favours in not broadening the experience of all our players to allow for better substitutions due to injuries.

Hats off to the Tillies for an unforgettable year and for super charging women's sport across the nation. Tony G will cop some stick about the last two games but he too has been incredible. I hope he stays on the Olympic campaign! A tournament that now looks wide open....

Last we heard, players needed to be carefully managed for loading. Yet Tony just sent 10 players out for 90mins in a friendly on artificial grass.

Final thoughts
By Samantha Lewis
Well, friends, it wasn't quite the way we wanted the Matildas' amazing year to end, but it serves as a reminder of just how much work is yet to do before the Olympics roll around next July.
Australia's strongest line-up wasn't able to come back from Canada's 40th-minute goal, with the Matildas struggling to create serious chances in the second half as the team began to tire.
There will no doubt be plenty of discussion around where the Matildas go next, how they prepare for their next two games against Uzbekistan in February, Gustavsson's choice of players, his rotations between both games, and the tactics they tried to deploy.
But this game wasn't just about winning or losing. It was also about celebrating a couple of things: the career of Canada captain Christine Sinclair and veteran teammate Sophie Schmidt, as well as closing out what has been a miraculous 2023 for women's football.
Record crowds, record viewership, record engagement across multiple platforms and mediums. It's been an amazing moment for the sport, and I personally can't wait to see what 2024 holds.
That's it from me. We'll have a more serious wrap of the game shortly, but for now, this is my final live-blog of the year.
It's been an absolute joy bringing the Tillies to your screens over the past 12 months. Thank you for being here with me and them through every step of the journey.
Until next time.

94' Australia win a corner!
By Samantha Lewis
Caitlin Foord does brilliantly to clang a cross off Jessie Fleming for what you think will be the final corner of the game.
Steph Catley sends a lovely ball into the crowd of players, but Canada's defenders head it clear, with Tameka Yallop trying to volley it goal-wards only for it to skew off into the sky and into the arms of Kailen Sheridan.

It's bewildering that Gustavsson hasn't brought on any of our up-and-comers. I just don't get it.

93' Australia try a Hail Mary

Alanna Kennedy has been chucked up-front in what looks like a pretty desperate move from Tony Gustavsson.
They've been hoofing crosses into the towering centre-back for the past few minutes, but she's been well handled by Canada's defenders.
Time has ticked into the fourth minute, so the whistle is only seconds away...

Canada still lead 1-0.
89' Kadeisha Buchanan is down
By Samantha Lewis
The centre-back is clutching her face with what looks like a bit of blood trickling down.
She just won a challenge against Alanna Kennedy in the air — the two players at full-sprint as the Matildas sent a curling cross into the box — with Kennedy swinging a stray elbow into Buchanan's brow.
She's strapped with black tape, but as she gets up and walks back onto the field, she's substituted off anyway.
She's replaced by Simi Awujo.

Could we see Chids come on or even Remy Siemsen up front to bolster our forward line?

I really can't decide if Canada are passing better than us, or both teams are dead square in that...
- Natty
Dr. Google can answer your question: Canada are currently out-possessing the Matildas 51% to 49%, with 458 passes to 426.
In terms of actual chances on goal, for stat nerds like me: Canada have an xG of 1.57, while Australia have just 0.28.

83' Leon causing problems

She's been a firecracker since coming on, owning that right wing several times as Steph Catley begins to tire. She's here again at the top of the box, dancing on the ball as Clare Hunt and Alanna Kennedy wait for her to commit to something, and she eventually does: flicking the ball onto her left side before rocketing a shot right at Teagan Micah.

Ten minutes of regulation time left. What should the Matildas do here? Is Gustavsson's one and only substitution working? Who could he chuck on in the final stages to offer something different?
